Connecting Slack
Install the Slack app, set permissions, and test your connection
Connecting Slack
Slack is the primary messaging platform for interacting with Quickly. This guide covers installing the Slack app, understanding the permissions it needs, and testing your connection.
Installing the Slack App
- Log in to your Quickly dashboard at app.quickly.ai.
- Navigate to Channels in the left sidebar.
- Click Connect Slack.
- Slack will ask you to choose a workspace. Select the Slack workspace where you want Quickly to operate.
- Review the permissions listed on the OAuth screen (see below) and click Allow.
- You will be redirected back to the Quickly dashboard. The Slack connection should now show as active.
Permissions Explained
Quickly requests the following Slack permissions:
| Permission | What It Does |
|---|---|
| app_mentions:read | Lets Quickly know when someone types @Quickly in a message |
| channels:history | Lets Quickly read thread context so it understands the full conversation |
| chat:write | Lets Quickly send responses, confirmations, and results to channels |
| users:read | Lets Quickly resolve @mentions to real user names for issue assignment |
Quickly only accesses messages in channels where it has been explicitly invited. It does not read messages across your entire Slack workspace.
Inviting Quickly to Channels
After connecting, you need to invite Quickly to the channels where you want to use it:
- Open a Slack channel.
- Type
/invite @Quicklyand press Enter. - Quickly will appear in the channel member list.
Repeat this for each channel where your team wants to use Quickly. Common choices include incident channels, project channels, and general operations channels.
Testing the Connection
Once Quickly is invited to a channel, send a test message:
@Quickly ping
You should see a response within a few seconds confirming the connection is working. If you do not get a response within 10 seconds, see the troubleshooting section below.
Using Quickly in Threads
Quickly works in both top-level channel messages and thread replies. When you mention Quickly in a thread, it reads the full thread for context. This is especially useful for:
- Creating issues from a discussion thread
- Generating postmortems from an incident thread
- Summarizing a long conversation
Troubleshooting
Quickly does not respond to @mentions
- Confirm Quickly is invited to the channel (
/invite @Quickly). - Check the Quickly dashboard to verify the Slack connection is active (green indicator).
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting Slack from Dashboard > Channels.
"App not responding" error in Slack
This usually means the Quickly service is temporarily unavailable. Wait a minute and try again. If the problem persists, check status.quickly.ai.
Quickly responds in some channels but not others
You need to invite Quickly to each channel individually. It is not added to all channels automatically.
Permissions error during installation
You may need Slack admin permissions to install apps. Ask your Slack workspace admin to approve the installation, or have them install it directly.
